Q: Which venues will be hosting the Commonwealth Games 2026?
A: Glasgow 2026 takes place across four iconic Glasgow venues:
- Scotstoun Stadium (Athletics and Para Athletics)
- Scottish Event Campus including:
- SEC Armadillo (Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting)
- SEC Centre (Boxing, Bowls and Para Bowls, Judo and 3x3 Basketball and 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball)
- The Hydro (Netball)
- Tollcross International Swimming Centre (Swimming and Para Swimming)
- The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Arena (Track Cycling and Para Track Cycling, Artistic Gymnastics)
A full event schedule for the Games and sports per venue is available www.glasgow2026.com/schedule/overview
Q: Why those four venues?
A: Delivering a new model for the Games here in Glasgow has been possible because of the city’s world-class sporting venues, major-event expertise and an unbeatable track record of local, national and international partnerships.
All four iconic venues were chosen because they already have a proven track record in hosting world-class sporting events and would require the minimal amount of venue readiness to prepare for the Games.
Q: Will there be any capital investment into facilities?
A: Yes, multi-million-pound investments will be made into the venue sporting facilities, including a new Athletics track at Scotstoun Stadium. Work on the Athletics track began in June 2025, with the first phase being completed in September 2025 ahead of the start of the Glasgow Warriors season.
The readiness work at venues is privately funded through the Organising Company, and new facilities such as the Athletics track will be gifted to the city of Glasgow, leaving a tangible long-term legacy for local communities.
Q: Will any facilities be built for the Games?
A: No, we have no plan to build new facilities. Some overlay will be completed in venues (i.e. temporary stands, surface work etc.) but there is no requirement nor any plans for new facilities to be built.
Q: Will there be an athletes village? Where will the athletes stay?
A: There are no plans to build a new athletes village for these games. Athletes will stay in hotel accommodation within accommodation hubs close to their venues, allowing for active travel to competition and training venues, and a smaller transport network.
This is similar to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where athletes were spread across four sites, staying in a mixture of pre-existing hotel and university accommodation. The model was also used for the UCI World Cycling Championships and the World Athletics Indoor Championships in 2024, both held in Glasgow.
Q: Was Hampden Park (host of Athletics at Glasgow 2014) considered for Athletics?
A: Given the amount of investment required in converting Hampden Park in 2014, it was determined Hampden wasn’t a solution which would be a viable option on this occasion.
Q: Why didn't you consider adding additional venues?
A: We want Glasgow 2026 to be the best it can be, and given the relatively short time frame to deliver these Games, cost and operational risk were the main drivers for not increasing the number of venues.
Every additional venue introduced brings added costs and complexity for venue hire, security, transport etc. To minimise those risks it was determined that it would be too costly to add additional venues.
Q: Will sports be held in general public areas (e.g. streets and roads)?
A: We have not included any sporting events held in public areas. Whilst we understand this will be disappointing for impacted athletes and fans, this decision brings significant savings in transport and security costs, and minimises the disruption for the general public by avoiding road closures.
Q: Will parking be available?
A: We encourage all ticket holders to use public transport and active travel wherever possible. Information on our venues, including local travel information is available here. Blue Badge parking will be available at selected sites.
Q: What items can I bring into venues?
A: A full list of permitted and restricted items will be shared closer to the Games. As guidance:
- Small bags only (sizes TBC)
- No professional cameras or large lenses
- Buggy and bag storage may be available at selected venues
